Finally, we bring these concepts together into a combined design that uses both fault domains and disaster recovery.

Here we:

  • Use availability zones and stretched clusters within a region to provide site high availability and continuous availability.

  • At the same time, we replicate to another region to provide disaster recovery.

VCF Fleet with Fault Domains and Disaster Recovery Design

In other words:

  • Within Region 1, we have availability zones and stretched clusters to protect against zone or hardware failures.

  • Across to Region 2, we have replication so that if Region 1 is lost, we can fail over to the DR region and continue operating.

Earlier releases, like 5.2, required more specialized configurations to achieve this full combination.
In the newer design, this combined model is fully supported and significantly more flexible:

  • It is now storage agnostic. We’re no longer limited to vSAN‑only stretched cluster designs; we support any storage that’s on the standard compatibility list.

  • This opens up more options for customers who want to standardize on non‑vSAN storage while still adopting these advanced availability and DR patterns.
